Lilayi Elephant Orphanage

The Lilayi Elephant Orphanage right outside Lusaka, Zambia, is one of only two elephant nurseries in Africa. Six young elephants currently live there, ranging in age from four months to three years. At some point, each elephant was traumatically separated from its biological family. Although elephants are herd animals and these elephants were complete strangers when they first met, they’ve formed a surrogate herd and have learnt to be elephants from each other. The traumatic experience that brought them here renders as depression and chronic illness in some. However, on the day I met these baby elephants, they were busy playing with each other, chasing each others tails, taking long mud baths and just being kids.
